Natural pool and house extension

IMG_0790.jpeg

Creating a new family home out of half a house.

The original 1930s house was a large detached house in a generous plot but in the 1990 the house was divided in two.   This half of the house was left with only one proper reception room and a number of smaller ancillary space.

This significant extension creates a properly balanced home, with a new kitchen/dining room opening up onto the garden, a den, study and family bedrooms. All this is enclosed by the long sweep of a clay tile roof that reflects the design of the original house.

A new feature in the garden is a beautiful natural swimming pool. This is an 8x4m rectangular pool , 2m deep and installed with a diving deck.  But instead of using chlorinated water there is a 100m2 plant renovation zone surrounding the pool planted with a selection of oxidation and marginal aquatic plants, which, together with perforated pipework, feeds naturally filtered water into the pool.  The pool provides a protected habitat for wildlife including amphibians, dragonflies and birds while also providing a wonderful place for fun and calm refelection.
